The Sevashrama has always been in the forefront in
offering its services to this holy city in particular
and the nation in general during all the natural
calamities like Flood (1924), Fire (1914, 1949), Cholera
Epidemic (1913), Refugee Relief & Rehabilitation
problems (from 1947 to 1950) and Uttarkashi/Chamoli
earthquakes (1991-92 & 1992-93) that created havoc in
this region. It also rendered medical services in all
the preceding nine Kumbha Melas since the very inception
of the Sevashrama in 1901. |

| This Hospital has been battling TB since almost its inception. Though Robert Koch isolated the Tubercle Bacillus in 1882, anti T.B. medicine was discovered sometime during 1944-45. One can only faintly imagine the panic it created in the mind of the victim and in his/her family when a person is found to have contacted TB. In the hours of their affliction, desolation and isolation the founder swamis spent hours together with the victims in their huts accompanying them until the door of a certain death. A monumental effort from founders brought forth a separate Ward for TB patients in 1913 where patients picked up from the streets and huts and were kept and nursed. |

| Then slowly effective anti-TB medicines began hitting markets. And this Institute sent several appeals asking for donations to procure these medicines for distribution among the victims. When Mobile van was introduced, the horizon of distribution expanded in all directions. The medicines started reaching extreme interiors of several villages across even adjoining States. |
